Healthy Aging

The Ruby C. Hunt YMCA recently has been presented with a sponsorship for a healthy aging program with Hopscotch Primary Care.

The Y and Hopscotch are both committed to maintaining the health of older adults and providing critical resources to rural communities. As part of the agreement, Hopscotch healthcare professionals will offer monthly workshops for people ages 65 and up. This demographic, which makes up 20 percent of North Carolina residents and over 30 percent of YMCA members in the region, requires high-quality healthcare tailored to their specific needs, said Dr. Rath Chau, Chief Medical Officer of Hopscotch Primary Care.

Joy P.

Joy P., a vibrant 63-year-old, turned to the Y for relief from her hip arthritis. Over the past year and a half, she has embraced a diverse range of activities, including pool workouts, chair yoga, and balance exercises, all supported by the motivating staff she loves. Joy has experienced remarkable improvements in both mobility and energy since joining, effectively slowing the progression of her arthritis. For her, the supportive community at the Y has been invaluable. Her advice to others is straightforward: keep moving and start taking classes early. As she puts it, “I wish I had started even earlier.”

Chirley H.

Chirley H., at 87 years old, began her journey at the Y after experiencing a stroke. After finishing therapy, she soon realized that she wanted to continue working out even after her recovery at the Y. Since joining the Y in 2006, Chirley has made remarkable progress, transforming from being confined to a wheelchair and brace to standing and walking independently. She initially engaged in chair volleyball and yoga but now participates in chair yoga and better balance classes. Chirley appreciates the diverse range of activities offered at the Y and values the social connections she makes there, especially since she lives alone. Her heartfelt advice to anyone looking to stay active in their later years is simple yet encouraging: “Come to the Y and stick with it.”

Sherry D.

Sherry D., a 54-year-old, began her fitness journey at the Y due to health concerns related to her weight. Since last September, she has consistently attended the Y, crediting much of her commitment to her friend Sara Gill. Starting with just the two of them, they quickly learned the importance of consistency. With both of them focusing on pool exercises to burn calories during her visits. Their dedication soon attracted others, and what began as a duo expanded into a group of 8 women known as the “Downsizing Divas.” Through these collective workouts, Sherry has shed 40 pounds and feels better than ever. She now delights in her ability to actively engage with her grandchildren. Being part of this supportive group at the Y holds her accountable and keeps her dedicated to her fitness regimen. Sherry acknowledges that true change begins internally: “It starts within you,” she reflects. “You have to be willing to take that first step.” She values the perseverance and patience required for her weight loss journey and is deeply appreciative of the camaraderie and encouragement she receives from her Y group.
