Type 2 diabetes is a condition in which the level of sugar (glucose) in your blood becomes too high. Glucose is your body’s main source of energy, and it mostly comes from the food you eat. Normally, a hormone called insulin—produced by the pancreas—helps move glucose from your bloodstream into your cells, where it’s used for energy.

With type 2 diabetes, your body either doesn’t make enough insulin or can’t use it effectively. As a result, too much glucose stays in your blood instead of fueling your cells, which can lead to serious health issues.

Common symptoms may include:

  • Increased hunger, thirst, and frequent urination

  • Feeling unusually tired

  • Blurred vision

  • Tingling or numbness in hands or feet

  • Slow-healing sores

  • Unexplained weight loss

Without taking steps to prevent diabetes or following a strong care plan, you may face serious health complications such as heart disease, nerve damage, kidney disease, or vision problems. The good news? Type 2 diabetes can often be prevented or delayed. Achieving and maintaining a healthy weight, staying active, and choosing nutritious foods can make a powerful difference.

The YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program is here to help you lower your risk. Our team will work alongside you to:

  • Provide support and encouragement
  • Set and achieve realistic goals
  • Teach healthy lifestyle habits
  • Connect you with trained lifestyle coaches
