February is Heart Healthy Month
The month of February is “Heart Healthy Month.” The Cleveland County YMCA is committed to helping the community becoming more health conscious. This month we will share valuable tips to keep you strong and healthy. Starting an exercise program is an important step toward ensuring a healthy heart. Cardiovascular exercise involved a “whole body” approach designed to work the heart and lungs, as well as improve their proficiency in delivering oxygen throughout the body. Examples of cardiovascular exercise include running, biking, group exercise classes, etc. Synonymous terms are aerobic exercise and endurance training. The Surgeon General report recommends that all people (over age 2 years) accumulate at least 30 minutes of endurance-type physical activity, of at least moderate intensity, on most–if not all–days of the week.
The Dover Foundation YMCA is offering a class designed for those with existing heart problems, or for those simply wanting to improve their level of cardiovascular fitness. An Exercise Physiologist will be your heart healthy coach for the class! Before and after exercise, your heart rate and blood pressure will be obtained. Your heart rate will also be checked during exercise in order to determine if you are in the best range to strengthen your heart and body overall. Educational information will be shared during this program to help you get back on the right track. Come join us for this opportunity to be heart healthy strong! Start moving today to benefit your heart in the days to come!

Diabetes Prevention Class
Join a certified Diabetes Prevention Program Lifestyle Coach for a year long program. Participants gather in a relaxed classroom setting and work together in small groups to learn how to incorporate healthier eating and moderate physical activity into their daily lives.
The YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program is a community-based lifestyle improvement program for adults with prediabetes. Its purpose is to empower adults with lasting lifestyle changes that will improve their overall health and reduce their chance of developing type 2 diabetes.
Currently, diabetes affects nearly 26 million people. Another 79 million have prediabetes and are at risk of developing diabetes, but only 11 percent are aware of it.
Research by the National Institutes of Health has shown that programs like the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program reduce the number of new cases of diabetes by 58% overall and by 71% in individuals over age 60.
If you have questions about this program, please contact Ashley Harris, RN. Phone: 704.669.3631.
