After School!

Fortunately, Cleveland and Rutherford County parents can take advantage of the safe and convenient after-school experience offered by the YMCA. The YMCA After school programs provide kids the chance to keep learning, moving and making friends. A typical day may include a healthy snack, homework assistance, weekly educational themes, sports, swimming, physical activity games and much more. Y programs also provide wonderful adult mentors and role models for the kids.

The North Carolina After-School Alliance has found those who participate in high quality after-school programs go to school more, behave better, receive better grades and perform better on tests. YMCA programs help parents to work without worrying about their kids. In addition to helping youth secure a better future, after-school programs help communities as a whole. According to the YMCA, most parents agree that the Y program helps them keep their jobs.

“The YMCA after-school program is critically important for our community. We allow parents to work without worrying about their kids,” said Cameron Corder, CEO of the Cleveland County Family YMCA. “The Y’s program is unique in that we are partners with the parents and the schools in making sure ALL kids reach their potential.”

Diabetes Prevention Program

The YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program is a community-based lifestyle improvement program for adults with prediabetes. Its purpose is to empower adults with lasting lifestyle changes that will improve their overall health and reduce their chance of developing type 2 diabetes.

Join a certified Lifestyle Coach for a year long program.  Participants gather in a relaxed classroom setting and work together in small groups to learn how to incorporate healthier eating and moderate physical activity into their daily lives.

Currently, diabetes affects nearly 29 million people. Another 86 million have prediabetes and are at risk of developing diabetes, but only 11 percent are aware of it.

Research by the National Institutes of Health has shown that participation in the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program reduces the number of new cases of diabetes by 58% overall and by 71% in individuals over age 60.

Risk Assessment

Find out if you are at risk for Type 2 Diabetes by completing this simple RISK ASSESSMENT.
