2008 Banquet Highlights: The 2008 Black Achievers Banquet was held on May 1st, 2008 at Cleveland Community College. With more than 75 guests and volunteers in attendance, this was one of the most successful banquets in recent years. More than $6,000 in academic scholarships were awarded. Visit the Black Achievers Photos page to see some of the nights activities. Program Description: The YMCA Black and Hispanic Achievers program is a national college readiness initiative designed to help teens of color set and pursue high educational and career goals. Through academic support, career exploration and mentoring, YMCA Black/Hispanic Achievers programs help youth raise their academic standards, develop a positive sense of self, build character, explore diverse college and career options, and meet and interact with professionals of color who serve as role models to inspire them to greater heights. Why Black or Hispanic Achievers: Education statistics show that high school and college drop-out rates are higher among African-American and Hispanic students compared to Caucasian students. In 2002-2004, the high school completion rate (age 18-24) for African Americans was 77.8%, the rate for Hispanics was 64.4% and the rate for Caucasians was 87.6%. African American and Hispanic students have lower rates of college attainment than Caucasian students as well. Research also shows that teens are more motivated to succeed academically when encouraged and guided by adults who are successful and who share cultural similarities. The YMCA Black/Hispanic Achievers program addresses these issues by pairing students with successful role models of color and providing academic and career-related mentoring and support services.
