"I love the Student YMCA because - Jen Wilson GWU/YPSP Graduate '06
What is the GWSY YMCA Professional Studies Program? The Gardner-Webb Student YMCA (GWSY) is a student-driven, service organization located on the campus of Gardner-Webb University. Through out the year, the GWSY offers programs that provide students a one of a kind experience to lead, serve and grow. Students who participate in the GWSY have the opportunity to see their ideas for programs put into practice with the help and creativity of other student members. Students are guided and supported as they develop and implement their ideas for service projects and campus activities. What are the benefits or the YPSP? The benefits of taking part in the YPSP are immense. In addition to obtaining quality professional leadership skills, students will receive numerous opportunities for hands-on experience. The YPSP minor can be joined to any major fi eld of study. The program offers students unique locations in which to complete academic internships through YMCAs around the region. Should students decide to pursue a career in the YMCA upon graduation, they will have completed almost all of the required management training for YMCA professionals to reach Senior Director Certification. In the professional YMCA setting, the YPSP minor will put students approximately 3 years ahead of other new professionals in terms of the knowledge, skills, and experience required for certifi cation. Students acquire a network of YMCA professional contacts and mentors, made through class projects/experiences. With leadership skills, hands-on practice, a network of professional contacts, and internship experiences, students enter the workplace as very marketable individuals with signifi cant opportunities to develop a lucrative and rewarding career. The GWU YMCA Professional Studies Program has been in operation for four years and to date 100% of its graduates have been gainfully employed at a YMCA within 2 months of graduation! Scholarships Available! Once accepted to GWU, students wishing to enroll in the YPSP can apply for a scholarship of up to $1000.
