YMCA Shines at NC Middle School UN Conference Twenty students from Burns Middle School and Crest Middle School participated in the YMCA NC Model United Nations Conference held in Black Mountain, NC at the YMCA’s Blue Ridge Assembly. The 2008 NC MSUN Conference was held April 11th through the 13th and hosted more than 120 middle school students from across the state. The YMCA NC Model United Nations is a new program for the Cleveland County Family YMCA and is designed to be an exciting educational strategy for middle school students to learn about global issues. Participants assume the roles of diplomatic representatives to the U.N. as they consider contemporary international concerns. Trough this role-playing event, participants develop greater understanding of world problems and the complexity of international relations. Beginning in November, 2007, students at each school formed small groups and chose a country to study and represent. The countries of Bangladesh, India, Chile, Ethiopia and Sweden were selected. Throughout the fall and early spring the participants research their country and write a proposal to present to the U.N. as well as preparing costumes reflecting the native dress in their country and informational displays and handouts. At the conference, students’ time is divided into various activities to expand their knowledge of cultures around the world. A majority of the conference is spent in Committees and the General Assembly where students present and debate their proposals while learning the Parliamentary Procedure. Thirty-Four countries were represented at the conference with the top 17 being heard in General Assembly. Several Cleveland County students were recognized for their accomplishments at the conference. The countries of Ethiopia (presented by Crest Middle School Students John Jarrell, Tripp Hastings, Amy Burch and Melia Nolen) and Sweden (presented by Crest Middle School Students Alex Self, Jane Gragg, Ryan Luckadoo and Tori-Beth Harrington) were heard in General Assembly. Both proposals were voted on and passed in General Assembly. The Ethiopia delegation was also recognized with the “Best Presented Proposal” and Crest Middle Student Jake Kennedy was recognized as a “Model Speaker”. Burns Middle students represented India and Bangladesh while Crest Middle School Students also represented Chile. All of the students did a wonderful job of representing their schools and the Cleveland County Family YMCA as first year participants. |
